Education born and bred. I have worked as a teacher for many private language schools, as a test centre administrator, as a teacher trainer, as an educational consultant, and as a publisher. I am an advocate for literacy and a huge proponent of using technology in the classroom. I mostly write about English Language Teaching. I live in Oxford.

  1. Shashank Camotions

Taare Zameen Par is one of my favourite movies and liked how kids phtoography in Gurgaon is done there

  2. I’m looking for the name of a movie our teacher told us about in 1974 so it probably predates this time. I’m sure it was an art film and unlikely to be an English language film. There is a classroom scene he told us about where some pupils are children and others are adults. They are different ages depending when last the character remembering the school last saw them. It sounded like a very novel idea.

  3. Thanks so much for sharing.

  4. I am looking for a movie where a class master tries to get some order in the music class but the men decided to play half notes which turned to be very good so much so that the teacher decided to enter a competition; however, after the teacher helped out their community the men decided to play as before to pay for hid good deed.

  5. José Laquidáin

I don’t know how easy to see it would be with English subtitles, but “La Lengua de las Mariposas” (The Tongue of the Butterflies) is a sad and moving portray of the social tensions in a small town in northern Spain just when the Civil War broke out in 1936. It does not dwell much on teaching, or the classroom, or the education environment, but central to the movie is the mentoring relationship between the very old and caring school teacher and one of his pupils, the tailor’s son. I warn you the end is very bitter.

  6. I would have included Good Will Hunting and Mona Lisa Smile on the list.

  7. Clockwork Mice and an EBD school.

  8. The Fencer (2015) based on the true story of an Estonian Phys Ed teacher who risked his freedom for his students. The remake of The Browning Version (1994) is not as good as the original, but still very good. The British mini series To Serve Them All My Days (1980). Children of a Lesser God (1986). The First Grader (2010) based on the true story of an 84 year old Kenyan villager who insists on attending elementary school. Ciao, Professore! (1992) about a school teacher mistakenly sent to teach in Naples. Les Grands Esprits/The Teacher/Great Minds (2017) is a film I haven’t been able to watch with English subtitles–a film about a teacher from a high ranked school forced to teach in a poor district.

  9. “A Yak in the Classroom”, an Asian film with English subtitles featuring a young teacher who needs an attitude adjustment. Inspiring and lighthearted.

  10. It’s a good list, but “Front of the Class” and “Spare Parts” should be part of it. Another two good movies are “Conducta “(Behavior), a Cuban film, and “Masala,” a Spanish film. “Walkout” and “Won’t Back Down” are also two good movies to watch. All the “Harry Potter” movies deserve our attention as well.

  11. “October Sky”, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Laura Dern.
True story of Homer Hickam, and the ‘Rocket Boys’. A coal miner’s son, inspired by the first Sputnik launch and encouraged by his teacher, takes up rocketry and eventually becomes a NASA engineer.

  12. I’m looking for the title of a movie from maybe the 40’s or 50’s about a teacher that during her last days is visited by previous students who’s life she significantly impacted. In the end, at her funeral there are two stone angels on each side of her coffin that turn to face her coffin indicating that she was a saint.

  13. My Fair Lady (1964) with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn is all about an eccentric but fantastic teacher.

  14. Nichelle Mendosa

Wow! Thank you! I permanently needed to write on my blog something like that. Can I implement a part of your post to my site?

  15. They left out the more violent, confronting films like Class of 1984, The Principle and 187. Particularly Class of 84 is a cult classic.

  16. Untamed Love is based on a true story and stars Cathy Lee Crosby.–A badly abused girl of 7 is saved from having to be admitted to an institution by a dedicated Special Education teacher whose class she’s been placed in until there is an opening in the hospital. In that time they form a strong bond and the child begins to heal. The teacher begins to think an institution is not what this child needs.

  17. I think I’ll stream *Conrack* for my teacher sons. Thanks for the recommendations!

And yes, I know *The Corn Is Green* is sappy, but what can I say? I sob like a baby every time.

  18. Have seen most of these. Nice list, but where’s “Front of the Class”?

  19. Good Morning Miss Dove is a great movie to watch.
